SLS FEATURES
Production Worthy Parts
What makes PLS (selective laser sintering) so user friendly is that it allows certain parts to include geometries so complex they could be made no other way.
Our selective laser sintering machines are able to quickly and effectively complete assemblies and multiple piece parts. Furthermore, their advanced durability and resistance to stringent fuels and chemicals, and increased heat temperatures gives them a broad-reaching platform for manned and unmanned products. Products such as fuel tanks, intake manifolds, and cold air ducting are ideal candidates for this selective laser sintering technology and are currently flying on some of the most recognized platforms today.
Production SLS Aerospace Experience
In 2007, Directed MFG became the first provider to successfully run commercial-grade FR-106 and Nylon 11 in the latest large tray, dual-laser EOS P700 SLS rapid prototyping and manufacturing system. We offer these and other notable production SLS aerospace materials on all sintered-based manufacturing equipment, so you can rest assured we have the knowledge to build to the material specification you require.
Material Selection
A variety of commercial-grade FR and non FR-rated plastic prototypes parts and other materials are at your disposal for plastic laser sintering. The latest material, FR-606, allows customers to utilize a material that is Nylon 12-based and will pass a 60-second vertical burn test. Other plastic laser sintering materials will pass burn tests at only 15 or 50 seconds. Beyond FR-rated materials, Directed MFG also offers the largest range of rapid prototype materials in the industry, including Nylon 12 Black, HST and Carbon Filled Nylon.
Weight Reduction
In addition to costs and manufacturing savings, as well as broader design freedom using SLS technologies versus traditional methods, there is also the weight factor to consider. Traditional parts designed from even the lightest weight alloys are no match for nylon-based SLS parts. What’s more, plastics laser sintering parts allow engineers to incorporate numerous two or multi-piece designs into one single component, which helps to achieve up to a 30% savings in weight reduction.
Quality Control
The SLS process is machine based; therefore, it requires perfected scaling, machine maintenance, material inspection and overall dedicated management to ensure repeated reliability. Directed MFG’s AS9100B Quality Management System assures that build materials and processes are consistent on each and every cycle. During each run we build a series of vertical and horizontal tensile bars, which serve as an integral measurement to prove the success of the latest set of parts. Our expert aerospace project engineers have a combined 10+ years of AS9100B standards and will support each phase of the program.
